Stop Buying Imported Home Goods in 2022

Let met start off by saying, this is a little self serving. But if you value quality products, stop buying your home décor from the big box store. I am challenging you to stop buying mass produced, cheap products. If you find something you like take the idea to a local maker instead. I am talking about wood signs, clay pottery, stain glass art…you get the idea. Also pay them what they are worth. Shoppers are quick to buy junk because of the price. Real craftsmanship takes time and has a cost that matches the quality. My hand crafted wooden sign will outlast your $19.99 mass produced mdf or chipboard sign for years to come.

Makers and artist know exactly what I mean. We hear from friends, family and total strangers every day “can you make this thing I found on Pinterest, but do it cheaper”.

Unless you live under a rock, you are probably somehow affected by the overwhelming shortage of goods that are imported. Regardless of your political views as to why there is a shortage, it is impacting what you buy on a global scale. It is hurting makers as well.

During the past two years there has been an explosion of makers and artisans that have hit the marketplace looking for a side hustle or even a full time gig. While not everything that hits the marketplace is high quality, most of the makers out there are super talented. So this year I encourage you to look to your local makers, wood workers or artists for inspiration. If you are going to buy “stuff”, buy it to last and proudly display it for your friends and family to see.

During the holidays I was blessed to have repeat business and new customers who appreciated hand made products. For me, ornaments were a big seller but those small keepsakes led to personalized projects like this coin rack.

So in 2022 I am issuing a challenge, when you can, buy only from small businesses, craft fairs, makers websites, your friends. Then tag them with a photo of the item on display in your home to help them grow their business. Don’t just tag them, tag my simple builds as well. I will highlight those businesses on my platforms to help spread the word. Gift hand crafted items to friends instead of a gift card to “Big Box Retail”. Be unique and give a one of a kind item they can use. Don’t just walk past vendors at the farmers market, stop and look to see if anything reminds you of your BFF or dear aunt Mildred and buy it for the next special occasion.

I am personally saving up for this beauty from Satisfactual Sign Co. Hoping he has them listed soon. I cannot wait to see this with full paint.

There are two types of people in this world. Those who make it them selves and those who pay with paper or plastic. Do you have an idea for a project? Let me know I will give you a quote.
